Sports Podiatry – Assessment, Injury Prevention & Treatment

Healthy feet and ankles are the base of every stride, jump, and pivot—so you can perform without pain. At Clinique Podiatrique St-Charles, we help high-performance athletes and active people (running, gym/strength, hockey/skating, soccer, skiing/snowboarding, hiking, etc.) prevent injuries, treat pain, and optimize performance.

When to see a sports podiatrist

  • Heel/arch pain (plantar fasciitis, heel spur)
  • Achilles tendinopathy, calf pain
  • Metatarsalgia (forefoot pain), Morton’s neuroma
  • Shin splints (medial tibial stress), repetitive stress
  • Recurrent ankle sprains, instability
  • Blisters, black toenails, ingrown toenail in runners
  • Return to activity, training load increase, new footwear

Goal: practise or return to your sport safely, reduce recurrence risk, and move more efficiently.

What we assess during your visit

  • Sport profile: volume, surfaces, footwear, goals
  • Biomechanical exam: mobility (foot/ankle/knee/hip), strength, alignment
  • Gait & running analysis (as indicated)
  • Footwear audit: length/width, wear pattern, heel counter, drop, cleats/skates
  • Load factors: training plan, recovery, long hours standing

You leave with:

  • A clear podiatric diagnosis
  • A personalized treatment plan (care, exercises, training adjustments)
  • Footwear guidance (models/categories suited to your foot and sport)

Sports podiatry treatments we offer

  • Custom foot orthotics (off-loading, control, guidance)
  • Functional taping/bracing, selective immobilization
  • Exercise programming (mobility, foot/ankle strength, calf work, stability)
  • Targeted care by condition (e.g., cryotherapy for plantar warts in swimmers/skaters; nail care)
  • Training advice: load management, graded return, surface selection
  • Prevention: warm-up, cool-down, and stretching protocols

Sports we commonly support

  • Running / trail (heel pain, shin splints, nails)
  • Hockey / skating (edges, friction, blisters, boot fit)
  • Ski / snowboard (pressure points, forefoot pain, boot fit)
  • Soccer, tennis, pickleball (sprains, forefoot stress, cutting/pivoting)
  • Gym / strength / cross-training (plantar pain, stability, loading)

Six winning habits to prevent injury

  1. Progressive loading (about 5–10%/week, depending on level)
  2. Footwear matched to your foot, sport, and surface
  3. Strengthening for foot/ankle/calves 2–3×/week
  4. Mobility & stretching after sessions
  5. Recovery (sleep, shoe rotation, varied surfaces)
  6. Listen to pain: adjust early to avoid setbacks

Areas served

We welcome athletes across the South Shore of Montréal: Longueuil, Brossard, Saint-Lambert and nearby communities.

FAQ – Sports podiatry

  1. Who is sports podiatry for?
Anyone active—from beginner to competitor—experiencing pain, discomfort, recurring injury, or looking to prevent issues and boost performance.
  2. Do I always need orthotics?
No. Orthotics are case-by-case. Often, exercises + footwear + load tweaks are enough.
  3. How soon can I return to my sport?
It depends on your diagnosis and tissue healing. We aim for a graded, pain-free return (no lasting pain >24–48 h).
  4. Do you assess running technique?
Yes, when relevant: gait analysis, cadence, foot strike, surfaces, shoe drop, and warm-up routine.

A consultation with one of our podiatrists could allow you to practice your sport safely and even improve your performance!
